Environmental education
The School of Sea promotes the implementation of educational activities for environmental conservation, to be carried out in schools and colleges as well as at the beach and at sea. These activities are aimed at one group of any school age (preschool, 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycle, secondary and higher education). The thematic content and activities are adjusted for the age of the participants, with appropriate programs from lower levels to higher education.

Short courses and Workshops
The School of Sea has developed several thematic workshops aiming college students, technicians and researchers as well as for anyone that is interested in the themes. These workshops follow on from the joint interest of Portuguese and international researchers for the study of marine mammals and their historical ecology. In recent years, several workshops were held, both in Portugal and abroad.

Previous workshops
MARINE MAMMALS HISTORY
The goals are to discuss various aspects of the historical relationship between human and marine mammals. This is an old relationship with a long common history of cultural and ecological interactions, marked by great interest of people in these giants of the sea, but also by conflicts in the use of their habitat - the oceans. Whales and dolphins, once considered "big fish" of the unknown sea, strange monsters that stranded on beaches and even hunted animals for human use, are currently regarded as beings whose natural populations need to be studied and preserved. Portugal is a country rich in the occurrence of these animals and also rich in history that connects the various fishing communities since the Middle Ages on the continent and then the discoveries in the Atlantic archipelagos. Today, as the country faces the sea and science, it makes sense to bring together this group of experts who will present their work and discuss future prospects in a highly interdisciplinary research area. Another issue now being developed as a workshop in a continuous way over time concerns the application of geographical information systems for studies of cetaceans.

Other workshops
CETACEANS OF PORTUGAL
